Stephen Fischman began his vocal studies in 1980 at the age of 32. For the ten years that
he studied with his voice teacher he used a breathing technique that failed to utilize the
diaphragm correctly, and as a result, was never able to sing comfortably above high G.
In 1990, after accidentally discovering that he was breathing incorrectly, and thus
improperly supporting his voice, Mr. Fischman left his instructor and began teaching
himself. Since then, he developed his voice into a strong spinto tenor, extending his range
to D flat above High C. At over 60 years of age, Mr. Fischman can still produce a strong,
sustained, resonant High C.
From the late 1980s through 2000 Mr. Fischman performed in numerous operas,
concerts, and recitals throughout the Southern California area. He now devotes his time to
teaching the original Bel Canto technique that was predominant during the "Golden Age of
Opera."
